Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Review (Part 1 of 7)

Finally it’s here! The truly epic review/critique/analysis/film making educational video of the 1999 film “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” There was so much to discuss with this film it had to be long so please don’t complain. If you think it’s too long then don’t watch it. In this opening segment I discuss the major flaw of The Phantom Menace which is the characters and the lack of connection with the audience.

  1. wrong, learnt it from a text written by laurence of arabia addressing the art of attacking a much greater foe. The first tenet is wrong, a regular army is not what you use for guerilla warfare.

  2. A pizza roll eating star is born!! No longer is your ‘best work’ done in the basement. Witty, quirky and right. 5/5.

  3. Well I agree with you on that, if even if it was still formulaic Hollywood, just done well. Neither even approach the best films of the past year.

  13. Now Episode One destroyed my fondness for Star Wars, but I think the reviewer went cherry picking when it came to the character descriptions. I mean Qui-Gon is the suave maverick who’s a risky gambler and a inept fighter with a fondness for young children. Queen Amadala is the irresponsible and thoughtless young tease who likes role reversal. Jar Jar Binks is the stupid Jamaican with ADHD.

  15. After seeing this shit, the other two abominations and then the absolute fucking crime against humanity that was the Crystal Skull, I honestly thought my opinion of George Lucas couldn’t fall any further… it just did

  16. After growing up with the first 3 films I loved Star Wars, I still remember the sinking feeling on the opening night of the Phantom Menace when I realised that the film I was watching was utter utter shite, I think it was around minute 7

  18. Sadly, no. LoA dealt w/ tactics, this is strategy. Plus, LoA lived 130 years after Washington.
The reason #1 exists is that it gives the populace hope, something to focus on. They won’t support the entire cause if there isn’t a large group out there already working for it. The proof of this played out in many conflicts of the 19th C. There were many, I’ll just mention the Peninsular War & the Boer War.
You’re also agreeing w/ my theme, that HCM learned his warfare from the west.

  20. “There was so much to discuss with this film it had to be long so please don’t complain.” The only complaint I have is that the review eventually ended. It’s one of the smartest and funniest things on youtube. Kudos to you, sir! I wonder if George Lucas has seen the review; if not, he should.

  21. This whole series is absolutely amazing. Really great job on the whole thing.

On a side note, does anyone else think the narrator sounds vaguely like Dax Shepard as Frito from Idiocracy?

  22. I’m totally blown away by this series of reviews, and I’m very compelled by the larger observations it makes about the competing values of control and collaboration. (A serial killer as a film critic, observing that the auteur Lucas has “killed” his series? Brilliant.)

  23. Harry S Plinkett is the dude. These reviews are the funniest thing I’ve seen in years. I love the kind of humor that points out the flaws in things. I can’t wait for more of these to be made. I’m going to send Harry a case of pizza rolls.
