Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader Re-edited (More intense duel)

The duel on the Death Star between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader was the first lightsaber duel created. Upon viewing the Prequels Saber duels such as Anakin and Obi-Wan’s duel in Episode III and then comparing them to this, some might think of this fight as terrible. In my ignorance, I once thought the same way which was my main motivation to make this. After rewatching all six Star Wars films in order, my mind was changed. Although this is the first and best re-edit of the Original Trilogy’s saber duels I have done, the original untouched version is still a lot better then the re-edit I have done. This was just an experiment in editing. The rematch between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader on the first Death Star, re-edited to match the speed and style of the Prequels.

  8. if you think that is impressive, go check out yoda’s duels with dooku and palpatine, not bad for a 900 year old.

  11. a few reasons really.
    1) to allow luke and the others to escape.
    2) to demonstrate that killing is never the best way to do things, making sure luke would never turn to the dark side.
    3) to become a “force ghost” or whatever they call it so he could guide luke and watch over him constantly (“use the force luke”, etc), thus becoming more powerful than vader could “possibly imagine”, as he says in the duel.
    4) to fuel luke with the passion to join the rebellion due to resentment for vader.

  12. The old Obi Wan is actually more powerful than the younger incarnation; George Lucas established that unless they are so old they will die in like, days, a Jedi’s power actually increases with age. Obi Wan Kenobi, here, is as powerful as Yoda was in episode III, and Yoda, even more powerful, and yet they STILL need to hide from Darth Vader. The villain Darth Vader had become massively powerful; existing in physical form wasn’t going to do Obi Wan, or anyone, any good.

  13. there is no need to over analyze; Lucas just wanted to make a Buck Rogers film, so everything you need to know is in the movies themselves, its said in all the lines.

Again, in this scene, Kenobi was in fact more powerful than Yoda was in the prequel trilogies, and yet he STILL couldn’t win against Darth Vader. Even Luke realized by the last episode, that Vader was holding back just because he was fighting his son.

  14. Vader was going to kill him anyway eventually; simply vanishing, demonstrated Kenobi’s mastery of the force, rather than be killed, he simply merged with it at will. To be able to do that, he would have to be more powerful than Yoda was in the prequels, and in the last episode Yoda was able to do it too having barely any strength left because he was that much more powerful from his previous incarnation and STILL they had to hide. Although comical now, Darth Vader was written to be fearsome.

  16. lol…COMON…

For a fact- nick gillard filmed the prequel fights at normal speed- Thats right, Obi wan and maul and qui gon fought without the footage being sped up- they just had to practice their swordplay a WHOLE LOT..

i’m a 1990 person who understands why these fighs were epic, but I feel the older generation is missing why the new fights are awesome—and then , it’s also a different way of representing the conflict…A part of that reflects on lucas though…

    just my 2 cents

  17. I dont know..

I admit this cmes across as “cool” but i know the lder fans will call it “dancing”

    >:[

See, the old fights relied more heavily on story- as in two sides of a family on opposite ends of a WAR

the prequels- lucas and Nick gillard were going for more of..”the power of the force’factor in fights..the pre-cog, and the rest of the stuff lucas added into the mix…

For me, i simply like good , LONG choreography-doesnt have to be “sped up” or “cgi” -what cgi?

Please Luke would get his ass kicked out there in the days of The Rebublic none of the light saber duels in the first trilogy even compare to the ones in the prequels.

  22. @BattleX28
I’d say Mace is better that Obi Wan 2nd only to Yoda remember Yoda even said Obi Wan wasn’t powerfull enough to hang with Sidious and Mace had him beat.

    Comment by gdogg024 — March 26, 2010 @ 3:37 pm

  23. amazing that it’s that easy to improve the old duels. I mean that fight after ROTS was epic those two got down, then for the rematch to be like that?! At least sped up it looks decent. Should do the same for the rest of the fights lol!

    Comment by gdogg024 — March 26, 2010 @ 3:42 pm

  24. @gdogg024 There is some debate over the Windu Vs Sidious fight, the conclusion was ambiguous to say the least if Palps had destroyed Mace outright it would not have played as well into the seduction and manipulation of Annakin. It wouldn’t be a first for Pals playing opossum in canon material. Not to take anything away from Mace.
